[carpe] For Neville -closed-

Asato was glad that the day had dawned clear and not too cold and there didn't seem to be a storm coming. All in all, a good day to spend outside.

The Ribika gathered up his tools for the day, taking care not to tangle the netting, and stowed it all in a shoulder bag before going to meet with Neville. The greenhouse wasn't a far walk and, remembering his manners, he knocked before opening the door.

So, fishing trip for Neville and Asato.

Neville relaxes and allows Asato to move his fingers and hand however is best. "Right, then. The further the better?" he asks, turning to look at Asato. The Ribika is very close, so Neville looks back at the water.

Asato really does have no concept of 'personal space' as it applies to humans so, yes, he is rather close. "Right. There are fish that like to stay far out in the deeper waters and you want to trap them before they know you're there." He smiles.

"It's like using a spear, but without getting too wet. Now you hold this side of the net like this..." The wizard (and typist) willing, Asato will take Neville's other hand and show him how to hold the other end of the net.

Neville and his typist don't mind a bit, as Neville tries to get the hang of using a net. He goes through the motions a few times, much like a batter warming up his swing, or a wizard practicing his swish and flick.

Asato smiles at how quickly Neville picks up on it. "Just like that," he says, letting go and stepping back. "Now, you take the netting up and throw it out over the lake." He mimes doing just that beside Neville.

Neville hadn't minded Asato in his space at all. In fact, he kind of misses the warmth when the Ribika moves away, but he shakes that thought away. He has no explanation for the lurch of loneliness he'd just felt.

Neville continues to follow Asato's instructions, doing just as he'd been shown, and tossing the net out over the water. His upper body strength sends it far, but he keeps a firm grasp on the wood.

Asato just didn't want to be smacked by arms or net, just in case. When Neville throws the net though, he claps his hands and smiles happily.

"That was great! Now give it some time to settle, then give one sharp tug to the line you still have."

Neville nods, grinning at Asato's approval. He lets it settle just a moment or so, and then tugs hard once, his brow furrowed slightly in concentration.

Asato watches the water. "Pulling on it makes the net close a bit. The harder you pull the tighter the bottom of the net gets and the fewer fish can get in and out."

"Right, then. I'll try not to tug again until...how will I know there's fish in it?"

"When you pull it all back in," Asato says. "Give it a tug when you feel ready."

"Already?" Neville looks mildly surprised.

Asato looks over at Neville with a smile. "If you feel ready to, give it another tug and pull it in just a little bit."

"Right, then," Neville nods, and focuses on tugging the net toward him.

Asato steps up behind Neville again and will, if he can, take hold of the wizard's shoulders. "Easy. It feels heavier than it is and if you move too fast, the fish may slip out."

Neville appears quite comfortable with the touch. "Okay, slower then," he murmurs, biting his bottom lip as he gently tugs the net closer.

"That's right," Asato says with a bright smile. "You're very good at this."

"You taught me well," Neville grins. It was trite, but true. He had a good instructor. The net was drawing closer to the shore.

Asato shakes his head. "Let's see how well I've taught you when the net comes to shore. Give it another, hard pull to cinch the net closed."

Neville nods, his motions pushing him back toward Asato slightly. He seems unaware of the fact. He tugs firmly at the net, hopefully closing it, and continues his slow pull. It's important to him, to get this right.

Asato doesn't really notice either, his own eyes trained on the incoming net.

And finally, the net reaches the shore. Neville doesn't realize he's holding his breath, anxious to see the results.

Asato's ears perk forward, eyes looking over the net...

Up to you if he's got any. He did everything right though.

Neville is pleasantly surprised to see fish, and not just a couple. There are five good-sized fish flapping against the bank. "Oh, that was brilliant!" He's beaming.

Asato claps Neville one the back, leaving his hand on the wizard's shoulder. "Wonderful! That's great! You're a natural at this."

"Thanks for teaching me how. It's so easy!" Neville grins.

I don't think I'll ever be able to rely on email notifs again. :|
