Asato was glad that the day had dawned clear and not too cold and there didn't seem to be a storm coming. All in all, a good day to spend outside.

The Ribika gathered up his tools for the day, taking care not to tangle the netting, and stowed it all in a shoulder bag before going to meet with Neville. The greenhouse wasn't a far walk and, remembering his manners, he knocked before opening the door.

So, fishing trip for Neville and Asato.

They both grew up without parents, and Neville knows that's probably not a good subject for either of them. Instead of replying right away, he takes a deep breath, enjoying the smells of fresh water and unpolluted air. The sun seems to be making the air come alive after being so cold for months. "I think the fish are in trouble," he grins.

Asaato smiles happily and sets his kit down to take out a few things. A rolled up heavy blanket to use to sit on, a snack of dried food just in case, and his netting. It wasn't very large as he started to unwind it, only about four feet by four feet.

"I think you're correct."

"Do you need any help?" Neville offers, moving away from the lake to Asato's side.

Asato smiles. "No, but I can show you how this is done." He stands up and holds out a bit of the netting for Neville to inspect. "It's easy to make, and small enough that I can catch enough food for myself for dinner and possibly for a meal tomorrow if I store them or even later if I dry what I catch."

"You really don't want to use the Mansion's kitchen at all," Neville muses as he inspects the net. It's really well done. "Not that you should conform to how everyone else does things." He himself would prefer living in his own cottage, but plans to discuss that with Merlin before making a decision. "This net is brilliant."

"It's... strange for me. To have everything so close I mean. Konoe always told me to not just take things that might belong to someone else and if my hunting for food can perhaps lighten to strain on the stores of the Mansion, then it's not any trouble for me."

"I don't think the Mansion ever lacks for stores," Neville comments. "But whatever makes you happy," he smiles. "And I'll enjoy fishing with you anytime."

"In the summer, it'll be even better since we can go into the water." Asato smiles and shifts the netting in his hand to show a long line wrapped around a bit of wood. "You hold onto this when you toss the net in, so that when it's time to pull it in, you don't have to actually get into the water."

Neville listens to Asato's instruction with a nod. "Right, then." Neville likes swimming and even wading, so he'll enjoy that when the weather turns hot.

And there will be a naked cat

"It's not very exciting, fishing with a net, not when compared to using a spear. I haven't made a new one yet, but I will when spring comes." He goes through the little absent motions of checking the stones he's using as weights and everything, before looking toward Neville's kit.

"I've seen people use those sticks before, but I'm not sure how they work..."

And there will be a blushing Neville.

"So let me show you." Neville first identifies the fishing pole parts - the rod, the reel, the line, the hook.

Asato listens attentively, curious about the whole thing.

"Let's dig up a worm, and I can demonstrate." He moves over to a nearby tree, pushing dead leaves out of the way with his foot.

Asato moves to help. "Why a worm?"

"To put on the end of the hook to lure the fish."

"I see." Well, in a way. He does dig a bit or a worm though, curious as to how this will work.

Neville's Great Uncle Algie had taught him to fish in the lake on the Longbottom Estate, having picked up a hobby from a Muggleborn friend back when he himself was a student at Hogwarts. "My Uncle always said this way was more sporting than using magic. Not for the worm though," he muses wryly.

Asato smiles a bit at that. "I haven't noticed fish coming out to get them before," he muses. "But the birds seem to like the worms."

Also, because I'm dim and rather slow, I've only just now realized that if I do wind up dragging Ianto into Carpe, there will be some confusion with Neville.

"They prefer them delivered," Neville remarks with a chuckle. By now, he's dug up a rather plump earthworm, which he begins attaching to the hook.

Oh yay, Ianto! I love Torchwood and Ianto. Please don't let my using GDL as a PB influence you. There would be some confusion at first, but there are others with the same PB in the game and it works out, yes?

Asato straightens up to come and watch him,ears pricked forward. "They do?"

Oh, I'm not worries. I just thought it would be amusing. ^^

Neville grins. "I was joking," he assures him. "But personal experience has taught me they definitely like worms." He holds up the hook, worm wiggling on the end. "And now we put this in the water so I can prove it."

Oh good! Because I think it would be as well! <3

You do have his attention. "You're good at using the ... rod?"

"Fair enough," Neville nods. "Thanks to my Uncle Algie. I don't suppose fishing with a pole is all that complicated," he adds with a shrug. He tosses the line out into the water. "Now you wait to feel a tug, or see the rod bend."

Asato's eyes follow the nearly invisible fishing line. "I see..." He steps back and picks up his netting, shifting it in his hands to hold it properly before throwing it out over the water in one smooth motion. There's a line that he's still got wrapped around his fist to draw the net back in later.

"After our first catch, we'll trade methods?" Neville smiles over at his friend. He's comfortable hanging out with Asato, and his smile is warm and companionable.
